History of the Squirrels

The Squirrels Invitational has been played since 1952. Golf Committee members John Goodrich and Charlie Pyle led the first small event. Goodrich was actively involved in USGA junior golf, and Pyle ultimately became the club champion at TCC, Myopia and Essex.

The initial event was a great success, and in 1953, the tournament increased to 48 teams.  Teams were divided into three flights of 16, similar to our current Championship Flight.

In 1979, the John H. Knowles Trophy was established, and presented to the winner.

Mr. Knowles, the former General Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Head of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York, was a perennial competitor in the event.
